Can You Buy Melatonin in Ireland? The Rules and Melatonin Free Alternatives

In Ireland melatonin is a prescription only medicine and cannot be sold as a food supplement. Here is what the rules mean, how well melatonin really works, and which melatonin free options have research behind them.

Starry night sky over a grassy hill, the benefits of a melatonin free sleep supplement

Summary

No, you cannot buy melatonin over the counter in Ireland. It is a prescription only medicine and is not allowed in food supplements.

If you cannot get it, or would rather not take a hormone, several melatonin free options have research behind them: magnesium, amino acids such as L Tryptophan and glycine, calming herbs, and a few evening habits that cost nothing.

Walk into a pharmacy in New York and melatonin sits next to the vitamins. Ask for it in Dublin, Cork or Galway and the pharmacist will ask for a prescription. That gap explains why so many people in Ireland search for melatonin every month. Below we explain the rules, what melatonin can and cannot do, and the alternatives worth trying.

Is melatonin legal in Ireland?

Yes, but only as a medicine. Ireland regulates melatonin as a medicinal product, authorised by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA). Authorised products, such as melatonin 2 mg prolonged release tablets, carry the legal status of prescription only.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) is equally clear on the food side: melatonin is not permitted in food supplements on the Irish market. In October 2025 it recalled five Life Extension melatonin products, and in May 2026 it recalled three Jelly Pills gummy products, including one marketed for children. The same prescription rule applies in the UK.

Can I order melatonin online from abroad?

Buying it from an overseas website does not change its status. Those products sit outside Irish oversight, and the recent FSAI recalls show that imported melatonin products are being taken off the market. If you believe melatonin is right for you, the safe route is a conversation with your GP.

How do you get a prescription?

Your GP decides whether melatonin suits your situation. Prolonged release tablets are typically used for short periods in adults aged 55 and over with insomnia, and children with specific sleep problems are treated under specialist care. A doctor will also check for causes that melatonin will not fix, such as sleep apnoea, low iron or medication side effects.

How well does melatonin actually work?

Less dramatically than its reputation suggests. A meta analysis in PLoS One (2013) pooled 19 trials with 1,683 people with primary sleep disorders. Melatonin helped them fall asleep about 7 minutes faster and added about 8 minutes of total sleep compared with placebo. Real, but modest.

Melatonin is a clock signal more than a sleeping pill. If your problem is a racing mind at bedtime or waking at 3am, other tools may fit you better.

Your body already makes melatonin from L Tryptophan, via serotonin, once darkness falls. We explain that pathway in the science behind L Tryptophan and melatonin.

Melatonin free alternatives, at a glance

Option How it may help What the research shows
Magnesium Contributes to normal psychological function and the nervous system 3 trials, 151 older adults: fell asleep 17 minutes faster than placebo (low quality evidence)
L Tryptophan Raw material for serotonin and melatonin Meta analysis: less time awake during the night, mainly at 1 g a day or more
Glycine Helps lower core body temperature Better self rated sleep quality in people with poor sleep
Lemon balm, chamomile, lavender Traditional calming herbs Small trials on relaxation and sleep onset
Warm bath or shower Helps the body shed heat before sleep 40 to 42.5 °C, 1 to 2 hours before bed, shortened time to fall asleep

Magnesium

A 2021 meta analysis in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies pooled three trials in 151 older adults. Those taking magnesium fell asleep 17.36 minutes faster than those on placebo, although the authors rated the evidence as low quality. Forms, doses and the newest trials are covered in our guide to magnesium for sleep.

L Tryptophan and glycine

A 2022 meta analysis in Nutrition Reviews found that tryptophan reduced time spent awake after falling asleep, with a stronger effect at 1 g or more a day. Glycine works differently: Japanese research suggests it widens blood vessels in the skin and lowers core body temperature, one of the body's own cues for sleep, and it improved self rated sleep quality in people with poor sleep.

Calming herbs

If stress keeps you awake, botanicals are a gentle place to start. Read our guides to lemon balm, chamomile and lavender.

Free habits that do what melatonin is often bought for

  • Morning daylight. Ten to twenty minutes outside after waking helps set your internal clock, so melatonin rises on time in the evening.
  • Dim the evening. Bright light at night delays your own melatonin release.
  • A warm bath or shower. A 2019 meta analysis in Sleep Medicine Reviews found that water at 40 to 42.5 °C, 1 to 2 hours before bed, shortened the time it took to fall asleep, even after only 10 minutes.
  • The same wake time every day. See the power of a sleep routine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy melatonin over the counter in Ireland?

No. Melatonin is a prescription only medicine in Ireland and is not permitted in food supplements. You need a prescription from your doctor.

Is melatonin legal in Ireland?

Yes, as a medicine. Melatonin products authorised by the HPRA can be dispensed with a prescription. What is not allowed is selling melatonin as a food supplement.

Can children take melatonin in Ireland?

Only when prescribed by a doctor. In 2026 the FSAI recalled melatonin gummies marketed for children because melatonin is not permitted in food supplements.

What is the best alternative to melatonin?

It depends on why you sleep poorly. Magnesium and calming herbs suit stress and tension, L Tryptophan and glycine have research on sleep quality and night waking, and morning light plus a regular wake time help a drifting body clock.

Can I take magnesium with prescribed melatonin?

They are often used together, but check with your GP or pharmacist first if you take any prescribed medicine. Read more in our article on melatonin and magnesium together.

Bottom line

In Ireland melatonin is a prescription medicine, not a supplement, and its effect on sleep is modest. If you would rather not go down the prescription route, magnesium, amino acids, calming herbs and simple light and temperature habits are well supported places to start.
